Hyderabad: In a tragic turn of events, two young men from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, lost their lives in separate incidents in the United States within a span of just two days, leaving families and communities devastated.
Sheraz Mehtab Mohammed, a 25-year-old resident of the Chanchalguda neighborhood in Hyderabad, died in a road accident on Sunday in Evanston, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. According to preliminary reports, Mohammed had recently moved to the US seeking better career opportunities. His family in Hyderabad has been informed, and efforts are underway to repatriate his body to India, his father Altaf Mohammed Khan confirmed.
This tragic accident occurred just two days after another Hyderabadi, 27-year-old Chandrashekar Pole, was killed in an armed attack at a gas station in Dallas, Texas, on Friday. Pole, who had moved to the US in 2023 for higher studies, had recently completed his master’s degree and was working part-time while searching for full-time employment. He was a dental surgery graduate, and his family has called on the Indian government to help bring his body back to Hyderabad.
Pole’s mother, Sunitha, expressed her grief and urged authorities for support, stating, “We learnt about his death from a friend’s parents who visited us and shared our grief. We request the central and state governments to ensure the safety of Indians and bring my son’s body back home as soon as possible.”
The Consulate General of India (CGI) in Houston, which oversees Texas, confirmed it is in touch with Pole’s family and providing all possible assistance. The CGI said, “The Consulate General of India, Houston, deeply condoles the tragic death of Mr. Chandrashekar Pole, an Indian student from Hyderabad, who was killed in a shooting incident in Denton, Texas. Local authorities are investigating the incident, and we are following up closely with them.”
These back-to-back tragedies have raised concerns among Indian expatriates in the US, highlighting the need for greater safety measures for students and professionals living abroad. The Indian government is monitoring both incidents closely, coordinating with local authorities to ensure a smooth repatriation process and offering necessary assistance to the grieving families.
The loss of Sheraz Mehtab Mohammed and Chandrashekar Pole has left a deep mark on the Hyderabad community, emphasizing the risks faced by young Indians pursuing education and careers overseas. Families, friends, and authorities continue to call for stricter safety protocols and timely support for Indians living abroad.
