Singapore, September 19, 2025 — Renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has tragically passed away at the age of 52 following a scuba diving accident in Singapore. The incident occurred on Friday, September 19, 2025, during his visit to perform at the North East India Festival. Despite immediate medical attention, Garg was declared dead at a nearby hospital.
Garg's death brings to light another personal tragedy from his past. His younger sister, Jongki Borthakur, a talented singer and actress, died in a car accident 23 years ago. On January 12, 2002, Borthakur was traveling to participate in one of her brother's cultural events in Sootea, Assam, when her car collided with a truck near Balipara in Sonitpur district. Zubeen Garg had been traveling with her but had changed vehicles just minutes before the accident.
In memory of his sister, Garg released the album Xixhu, dedicating it to her. This tragic event profoundly impacted Garg's life and career, influencing his music and public persona. Despite facing personal hardships, Garg remained a beloved figure in the Indian music industry, known for his versatility and contributions across various languages and genres.
