Intel is gearing up to unveil its third-quarter results, and investors are eager to find out if recent substantial investments can help stabilize the beleaguered chipmaker. Following a series of operational challenges and stiff competition, these cash infusions bring a hopeful outlook.
The financial support consists of a $5 billion investment from Nvidia, resulting in a near 4% share for the AI giant, along with a $2 billion boost from Japan's SoftBank. Uniquely, the U.S. government has also entered the fray by acquiring a 10% stake for $8.9 billion after urgent discussions in Washington. Collectively, these investments have driven Intel’s shares to more than double in value this year, surpassing some of Nvidia’s gains.
However, despite this financial influx, Intel is projected to face a slight decline in third-quarter sales, expected to hit $13.14 billion, coupled with a loss per share of 22 cents. Adjusted earnings per share are anticipated to reach just 1 cent. Analysts warn that share dilution from these agreements may impact future profits, but attention remains focused on the long-term strategic trajectory rather than short-term gains.
The company still faces hurdles, with ongoing market share losses in the personal computer and server CPU sectors to AMD, and the rise of Arm-based candidates posing a challenge to its x86 rule. In a positive note, global PC demand shows signs of recovery, with Gartner identifying an 8% increase in third-quarter shipments. Intel’s PC chip division may experience an 11% revenue uptick, bolstered by the upcoming release of its Panther Lake processors built on the advanced 18A manufacturing node.
Moreover, Intel’s data center division is also on an upward trend, with sales expected to rise by 18% to $3.95 billion. Although it has yet to make a significant mark in the AI GPU realm dominated by Nvidia, the new AI-centric server chips set to be launched next year may signify a pivotal moment.
Experts view Intel's recent actions as a show of confidence from both investors and governmental bodies, granting the company the essential space to realign its strategic initiatives. The true challenge lies in whether these collaborations and new product releases can foster enduring market relevance and long-term profitability.
