Tensions are mounting inside the Labour government as Prime Minister Keir Starmer struggles to contain growing unrest within his own ranks. What began as whispers of cabinet discontent has erupted into public mudslinging, exposing deep divisions in Downing Street and fuelling questions about Starmer’s leadership and his team’s political strategy.
Sources close to the government admitted, “It’s not been our finest 24 hours,” following a flurry of anonymous briefings suggesting that Starmer would “fight any attempt to remove him” and that several cabinet members — including Health Secretary Wes Streeting — were plotting a leadership challenge.
Streeting quickly dismissed the rumours, affirming his loyalty to the Prime Minister and calling for the dismissal of those responsible for the leaks. In response, Starmer labelled the attacks on his ministers “unacceptable” and vowed to investigate the source of the damaging briefings.
Much of the blame from within Labour has fallen on Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s influential chief of staff and campaign strategist, who has been accused of fostering a “toxic” work culture. While McSweeney remains silent, his critics argue that as the Prime Minister’s key political adviser, he should take responsibility for the disarray.
Despite the chaos, insiders confirm that Starmer and Streeting held a brief phone conversation to ease tensions. The Prime Minister reportedly apologised, and both agreed to speak again “soon.” The call marked an attempt to present unity after a turbulent 48 hours that saw Labour’s internal divisions dominate national headlines.
Observers note that Starmer’s popularity — and that of his government — has declined sharply in recent months, even after Labour’s landslide electoral victory. Many within the party privately question the government’s direction and fear that continued internal feuding could erode public confidence.
“Streeting handled the situation with dignity and humour,” said one Labour MP, noting that his composure contrasted sharply with the defensive tone from No.10. Others within the party believe that the briefings meant to bolster Starmer may have backfired, amplifying speculation about alternative leadership contenders.
As Starmer attempts to regain control, there are increasing calls for transparency and discipline within his administration. Several MPs have described the situation as “an absurd spectacle” that distracts from policy goals and damages Labour’s credibility.
With mounting pressure and a restless parliamentary caucus, Starmer faces a critical challenge — uniting a party that appears increasingly divided despite its historic electoral mandate.
Unless Labour can reverse its slump in popularity and restore internal trust, analysts warn that similar episodes of infighting are likely to resurface, threatening the government’s stability and the Prime Minister’s long-term leadership.
