Amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, many Indian students are stranded in Iran, unsure whether to leave immediately or stay for their examinations. India has advised all its nationals to return by any available transport, but students face the dilemma of missing crucial exams scheduled in early March.
Estimates suggest there are 1,000–1,500 Indian students in Iran, many from Jammu and Kashmir, pursuing medical degrees. Missing exams could delay graduation or affect the professional recognition of their degrees. Students and their families have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention.
The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has written to the Prime Minister, highlighting the conflict between the travel advisory and exam schedules. Iranian medical exams, essential for progression to clinical training, occur only twice a year, meaning missing them could result in up to six months’ delay.
While flights are still operational, uncertainty about the geopolitical situation has left students anxious. Iran and the US are set to resume nuclear talks in Geneva, but previous conflicts and recent US military deployments in the region have increased fears among the student community.
