Lebanese Forces Assert Full Authority Over Weapons in Southern Region

Lebanese Forces Assert Full Authority Over Weapons in Southern Region

Post by : Saif Rahman

The Lebanese Armed Forces have proclaimed that they have successfully enforced state authority over armaments in southern Lebanon, characterizing this achievement as “effective and tangible.” This announcement is significant for Lebanon, which has historically dealt with armed factions outside government jurisdiction.

As per the military, security operations have increased across much of southern Lebanon, with the exception of zones still occupied by Israeli troops. The army announced that it met its timeline for eradicating non-state weapons from the area by the year-end.

Southern Lebanon has long been a contentious region due to ongoing strife with Israel and the presence of various armed groups. A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon in 2024 concluded over a year of hostilities, stipulating that only official Lebanese security personnel would bear arms in the south.

Although Hezbollah was not explicitly mentioned in the army's statement, it is widely acknowledged that the reference pertains to the influential armed group, which has a history of conflict with Israel and considerable sway in Lebanese regions. A security source noted that the army's declaration indicates that no group can now instigate assaults from southern Lebanon.

The army acknowledged that challenges persist, stating that efforts to remove unexploded ordnance, dismantle tunnels, and provide comprehensive security are ongoing. Such hazards continue to jeopardize both civilian lives and military personnel.

The U.S. and Israel have exerted increasing pressure on Lebanon to ensure all weapons are secured under state authority. Lebanese officials are concerned that any lapses could lead to renewed Israeli military interventions in a nation already grappling with economic decline and infrastructure degradation.

Israel and Lebanon have leveled accusations of ceasefire violations against each other since the 2024 agreement, illustrating the precarious nature of the current situation. Nonetheless, the military's statement appears to signify Lebanon's intent to reassert its control and stave off further conflicts near its southern border.

For many residents of Lebanon, the army's announcement brings a cautious sense of optimism. Stronger state oversight could potentially foster enhanced stability and security in a region marred by years of turmoil. However, achieving lasting peace will rely on ongoing collaboration, diligent enforcement, and regional tranquility.
