Grammy-winning artist Lizzo has candidly opened up about a challenging period in her life. In a moving essay on Substack, she reveals how depression, controversies, and intensifying pressures led her into a vulnerable state. Her narrative not only traces her gradual path to healing but also advocates for acceptance and emotional resilience.
Lizzo shared that her weight loss journey started in the fall of 2023, primarily driven by her mental health struggles rather than fitness. Overwhelmed by public scrutiny and a personal scandal, she felt isolated and even contemplated suicide, distancing herself from loved ones. Her honest reflection captures the emotional toll many individuals face but seldom voice.
Seeking professional guidance became a pivotal step for her. Through therapy, she recognized that her weight had been both her identity and a source of comfort. She termed it a “shield” that provided protection during tough times, fostering a more compassionate self-image and better understanding of her emotional triggers.
The controversy she referenced stemmed from allegations by dancers who accused her of weight-shaming and harassment. Although Lizzo denied these claims, the turmoil significantly impacted her mental health. In the past, she might have resorted to binge-eating under stress, but this time, her focus shifted to health rather than weight concerns. By January 2024, she proudly noted a 16% reduction in body fat and over a 10-point decrease in her BMI.
Music played a significant role in her healing. She released her mixtape, My Face Hurts From Smiling, on June 27, containing 13 emotionally charged tracks. While her fifth album, Love in Real Life, featuring singles like Still Bad, is completed, she announced in September that it would be temporarily shelved to prioritize her well-being.
Lizzo’s essay serves as a powerful reminder that even those who achieve greatness face daunting challenges. Her story inspires others to seek help during tough times, embrace their bodies, and practice self-kindness. It underscores the message that healing is a gradual process, often initiated by open dialogues and personal acceptance.
