Lorry Collision in Singapore Injures 21, Driver Arrested

Lorry Collision in Singapore Injures 21, Driver Arrested

Post by : Rameen Ariff

A serious traffic incident in Singapore has left 21 people injured after a lorry ran a red light and collided with another lorry, Singapore police confirmed on Friday. The collision occurred on Wednesday at approximately 10:45 pm at the busy junction of Choa Chu Kang Way by Sungei Kadut Avenue and Sungei Kadut Loop. The lorry, carrying nine passengers, failed to obey the red-light signal, colliding with another lorry that was legally passing through the junction on a green light. Authorities emphasized that red-light running continues to be a major road safety concern in Singapore, with the potential to cause severe injuries, as seen in this incident.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) stated that the driver responsible for the collision has been arrested for dangerous driving causing grievous hurt. Investigations into the accident are ongoing. The second lorry involved was ferrying 11 passengers at the time of the collision. All passengers, except the offending driver, were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from fractures and lacerations to general bodily pain. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) deployed hydraulic rescue equipment to free a person trapped in one of the lorries, highlighting the severity of the crash.

Singapore authorities reiterated that dangerous driving, including red-light violations, poses a serious risk to all road users. While red-light violations decreased by 25.3 percent in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, the number of accidents resulting from such violations increased by 38.3 percent. This lorry collision demonstrates how failing to follow traffic signals can escalate into life-threatening incidents. The SPF continues to stress the importance of compliance with road rules to prevent such tragedies.

The legal consequences for the driver involved in the lorry collision are severe. Dangerous driving causing grievous hurt carries a jail term of up to five years and disqualification from driving all vehicle classes. In the case of subsequent convictions, the punishment increases to a jail term of one to ten years with a driving disqualification. Authorities hope that stringent enforcement, coupled with public awareness campaigns, will prevent further red-light collisions and improve overall road safety in Singapore.

Singapore’s traffic authorities are also advancing preventive measures to reduce accidents like this lorry collision. Since January 2024, the police have been enforcing the mandatory installation of speed limiters on lorries weighing between 3,500 kg and 12,000 kg, ensuring vehicles do not exceed 60 km/h. The upcoming January 2026 deadline for full compliance reinforces Singapore’s commitment to safer roads, particularly for lorries transporting workers and passengers. This lorry collision underscores the urgent need for vehicle operators to implement safety protocols.

The recent lorry collision in Singapore is a stark reminder of the importance of a safety-first culture among drivers and logistics companies. Authorities urge companies to prioritize driver training, enforce traffic compliance, and conduct regular vehicle safety checks. The incident involving 21 injured passengers demonstrates the catastrophic consequences of reckless driving. Singapore police hope that strict enforcement, combined with public awareness, will reduce red-light violations and prevent similar accidents in the future.
