On October 3, 2025, Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina delivered a live address on Facebook, stating his willingness to listen and find solutions to the nation's challenges. He emphasized his commitment to addressing the issues facing Madagascar but did not respond to the growing calls for his resignation.
The live address coincided with ongoing youth-led protests across Madagascar, inspired by similar movements in Kenya and Nepal. These demonstrations, which began on September 25, have become the largest wave of unrest the country has seen in years. Protesters are voicing their frustrations over worsening water shortages, power outages, and widespread poverty.
In an attempt to quell the unrest, President Rajoelina dissolved the government on September 29. However, this move has done little to address the underlying grievances, and protests have continued unabated. The United Nations reports that at least 22 people have been killed and more than 100 injured during the initial days of the protests, though the government disputes these figures.
Despite the president's calls for dialogue, protesters are demanding his resignation and the dissolution of key state institutions, including the election commission, Senate, and top court. Opposition leaders have voiced support for the protests and have refused to form a coalition with Rajoelina's administration.
