England head coach Brendon McCullum has expressed strong confidence in captain Harry Brook despite the team's disappointing performance in the one-day international tri-series in Pakistan. Although England failed to secure a place in the tournament final, McCullum believes the experience will prove valuable for Brook as he continues to develop his leadership abilities at the international level. England's campaign in Pakistan was far from what the team had hoped for. The side suffered defeats in its first three matches, putting its chances of reaching the final under serious pressure. However, the team managed to finish the competition on a positive note by defeating Sri Lanka by 55 runs in its final fixture in Lahore on Thursday. Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum highlighted the importance of giving young captains opportunities to handle challenging situations. He said Brook had gained valuable experience from the assignment, particularly when it came to making quick decisions under pressure and managing different phases of a match.
The final match against Sri Lanka provided England with an opportunity to restore some confidence after a difficult run in the competition. Batting first, England posted an imposing total of 386 runs, setting Sri Lanka a target of 387. Sri Lanka appeared capable of chasing down the target after Pavan Rathnayake delivered an impressive century. His innings kept the contest alive and placed England under considerable pressure during the chase. However, England's bowlers responded strongly and managed to dismiss the Sri Lankan batting line-up for 331 runs. The 55-run victory gave England a positive finish to an otherwise disappointing tournament. While the result came too late to change England's position in the competition, it offered the team some encouragement ahead of its upcoming international commitments.
Despite England's struggles, McCullum made it clear that he was not questioning Brook's leadership. Instead, the head coach praised the young batter's understanding of the game, tactical awareness and ability to communicate with teammates. McCullum described Brook as one of the best tactical captains he had encountered. He also highlighted the respect Brook commands within the dressing room, suggesting that his leadership goes beyond simply making decisions on the field. According to McCullum, Brook has an intelligent approach to cricket and understands how to involve other players in leadership responsibilities. Rather than handling every decision independently, he encourages contributions from teammates and maintains communication throughout the game. The coach believes this collaborative approach is an important quality in a captain, particularly in modern international cricket, where matches can change direction rapidly.
Leading England in an international tournament in Pakistan was a significant responsibility for Brook. The pressure of managing a team through consecutive defeats offered him an opportunity to understand the demands of captaincy at the highest level. McCullum explained that Brook had been placed in situations where decisions had to be made quickly, with even a single tactical move potentially influencing the outcome of a match. Such experiences can help a captain develop a better understanding of match situations, bowling changes, field placements and the management of players under pressure. The coach's comments indicate that England's management remains supportive of Brook despite the team's disappointing results. His backing also suggests that the management wants to give the young captain time to learn and establish his own leadership style.

Following the conclusion of the Pakistan tri-series, England will shift its attention towards an upcoming white-ball tour of Australia in November. The series will provide another important opportunity for the team to assess its combinations and prepare for future international competitions. England is also expecting the return of batter Jacob Bethell and fast bowler Jofra Archer, both of whom missed the Pakistan assignment. Their availability could strengthen the team's batting and bowling options for the upcoming tour.
