Meta Teams with Blue Owl for $27 Billion AI Data Center Initiative

Meta Teams with Blue Owl for $27 Billion AI Data Center Initiative

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Meta has made a significant leap in its artificial intelligence strategy by securing a $27 billion financing partnership with Blue Owl Capital to establish its largest global data center in Richland Parish, Louisiana. The center, named Hyperion, is expected to be a pivotal element in Meta's AI infrastructure.

As part of the deal, Meta will maintain a 20% equity stake, while majority control will reside with Blue Owl-managed funds, which are investing approximately $7 billion in cash. Additionally, Meta will obtain a one-time payout of around $3 billion, marking this as its most substantial private capital venture to date.

The Hyperion facility aims to provide more than 2 gigawatts of computational capacity, sufficient to enable the training of sophisticated large language models similar to those powering popular AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Susan Li, Meta’s finance chief, described the partnership as a “bold step forward” in the company’s AI journey. Once operational, the facility is projected to create over 500 jobs and will enhance Meta's growing network of AI data centers.

This collaboration emerges as major tech firms—such as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, CoreWeave, and Meta—are predicted to allocate over $400 billion to AI infrastructure investments in the current year, according to Morgan Stanley's projections.

Additionally, OpenAI has purportedly secured multiple agreements that could total more than $1 trillion to obtain substantial computing power from various facilities around the globe.

The initiation of the Hyperion project illustrates the concerted efforts of technology giants to bolster the computing framework essential for the AI-driven future. With this investment, Meta aims not only to stay competitive but to lead the way in intelligent infrastructure development.
