Severe rainfall across Mexico has caused massive destruction, claiming at least 27 lives and leaving several others missing. Officials confirmed on Friday that relentless downpours triggered multiple landslides, caused rivers to overflow, and left thousands of people struggling without power in several regions.
In Hidalgo state, civil protection authorities reported 16 deaths as heavy rains damaged nearly 1,000 homes and hundreds of schools. The situation remains critical as emergency teams continue rescue and relief operations in flood-hit areas.
Puebla state Governor Alejandro Armenta said nine people lost their lives due to incidents linked to the rain, including landslides, while five others remain missing. Veracruz state authorities also confirmed two fatalities as floodwaters swept through communities.
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep concern over the disaster, assuring citizens that government agencies were working tirelessly to provide aid and restore essential services. “We are supporting the population, reopening roads, and restoring electricity,” she wrote on X. She also shared images of rescue workers wading through flooded streets while delivering food and supplies to stranded residents.
In Poza Rica, a town in Veracruz, flooding from the overflowing Cazones River brought the area to a standstill. A video shared by the Navy showed an officer moving through neck-deep water as he searched for trapped residents and assessed the damage.
The Ministry of Defence has deployed over 5,400 personnel to assist with evacuation, rescue, and cleanup operations in the worst-hit areas. Helicopters and boats are being used to reach isolated towns where access roads have been completely submerged.
Meanwhile, tropical storms Raymond and Priscilla have added to the country’s weather woes, bringing more rain to the Baja California peninsula and the western Pacific coast. Meteorologists have warned of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, raising fears of further flooding and landslides.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable regions to remain alert and follow evacuation orders as more storms are expected to hit parts of central and southern Mexico. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams racing against time to locate the missing and provide relief to affected families.
The deadly rains have once again highlighted the growing impact of extreme weather in the region, leaving communities devastated and in urgent need of support.
