A Minnesota prosecutor has urged the public to come forward with any videos or evidence related to the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an immigration enforcement officer. The appeal follows the release of new footage revealing the tense final moments of the encounter.
The incident has ignited protests across multiple cities, coinciding with a separate Border Patrol shooting in Portland, Oregon, sparking widespread debate about immigration enforcement tactics under the current administration. Officials from the federal government have defended the officer involved, claiming he acted in self-defense while protecting himself and fellow agents.
The newly surfaced 47-second video shows the scene from the perspective of the immigration officer who fired the shots. It captures the officer approaching and circling Good’s vehicle in the middle of the road while recording on his phone. Meanwhile, Good’s wife is seen recording from outside the car, confronting the officer. Tensions escalate as other officers order Good to exit the vehicle. When Good attempts to drive forward, the officer opens fire, and chaos ensues as her vehicle crashes into parked cars.
Experts have raised concerns about the officer holding a firearm in one hand and a phone in the other, questioning whether proper training allows such behavior during enforcement actions. Legal scholars argue the casual filming does not align with perceiving Good as an immediate threat.
The officer, a veteran with nearly two decades of service in immigration enforcement, was previously injured while attempting to arrest a fleeing suspect. Efforts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful.
Local prosecutors have expressed concern over federal decisions that exclude state and local agencies from participating in the investigation. They emphasize that federal agents do not have blanket immunity and that local authorities retain jurisdiction over the case.
The shooting has struck a chord in Minneapolis, the city still grappling with the legacy of police violence from previous high-profile cases. Hundreds gathered at the scene in protest, leading to school closures and continued demonstrations outside federal immigration facilities.
In Portland, a related incident saw Border Patrol officers shoot two people linked to a Venezuelan gang outside a hospital. The incident is under state investigation, with officials scrutinizing the use of force.
The Minnesota incident occurred during the largest immigration enforcement operation in the Twin Cities, involving over 2,000 officers and more than 1,500 arrests. The federal government is reallocating officers from other states as the crackdown intensifies.
Renee Good’s death is one of several linked to immigration enforcement since the current administration took office, prompting calls for accountability and further protests nationwide.
