As one of the most convenient meals globally, instant noodles are priced affordably, delicious, and require minimal cooking time. They are a go-to choice for students, professionals, and those living alone seeking a quick meal. However, doctors caution against the potential health risks linked with frequent consumption.
Dr. Manan Vora, an orthopaedic surgeon based in Mumbai, highlighted the dangers of eating instant noodles regularly in a video released on December 1. While he says enjoying them occasionally is acceptable, incorporating them into daily diets can lead to health issues over time. He recommends opting for real foods to safeguard gut health, energy, and long-term wellness.
Instant noodles are not mere snacks; they are ultra-processed products containing artificial preservatives, chemicals, and synthetic additives that enhance taste and prolong shelf life—but at a cost to the body.
An alarming component is TBHQ, a preservative known to prolong food freshness. Although it prevents oils from becoming rancid, frequent consumption has been linked to oxidative stress—creating an imbalance that may weaken cells and expose the body to health risks.
Packaging also poses a concern. Many instant noodle cups are made from polystyrene, releasing microplastics into the noodles when hot water is added. These microplastics can enter the digestive system, possibly causing inflammation and irritation. Over time, this can undermine digestion and overall health.
Moreover, artificial flavourings, colours, and MSG (monosodium glutamate) are prevalent in instant noodles. While MSG is generally safe in small quantities, a diet high in these additives can lead to increased cravings, driving down the desire for healthier food options. Dr. Vora notes that these noodles are designed for longevity on shelves, not for nourishing the body.
This caution is especially crucial for younger generations. Many teenagers and working adults depend on instant noodles for their affordability and convenience. However, consistent consumption can result in lasting repercussions like poor digestion, decreased energy levels, and heightened inflammation.
Healthcare professionals advise turning to wholesome, home-cooked meals. Simple dishes such as dal, rice, eggs, and vegetables offer superior nutrition and help maintain balanced energy levels. Consuming real food also fosters a stronger immune system and enhances overall health.
While instant noodles can provide comfort, they shouldn’t take the place of balanced meals. Dr. Vora’s advice is clear: indulge in them occasionally, but be mindful of integrating them into your daily diet. To stay healthy, energetic, and robust, your body craves real, fresh nutrition.
