NORAD Celebrates 70 Years of Santa Tracking Tradition

NORAD Celebrates 70 Years of Santa Tracking Tradition

Post by : Saif Rahman

This Christmas Eve marks the 70th anniversary of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracking Santa Claus as he journeys around the globe. This cherished tradition combines festive cheer with the serious nature of air defense, bringing joy to countless children and families every year.

NORAD's Santa tracking began in 1955 by chance when a misprinted phone number led kids to a military command center instead of Santa. Instead of turning them away, an officer playfully informed them that Santa was safe and flying. This response laid the foundation for an enduring annual tradition.

Every Christmas Eve, NORAD states that Santa departs from the North Pole in his sleigh, powered by reindeer. Without a flight plan, his route remains a mystery. Officials humorously note that only Santa knows his destinations and arrival times at homes around the world.

NORAD starts tracking with radar systems in the northern reaches, which detect Santa’s sleigh as it takes off. Satellites then follow his global journey. Interestingly, these satellites also serve to warn North America of missile threats, showcasing how advanced technology can bring holiday joy as well.

NORAD humorously claims that Rudolph's glowing red nose aids satellites in locking onto the sleigh using heat sensors. The command also provides updates, maps, and images online, letting children follow Santa’s journey as he delivers gifts worldwide.

This year, U.S. President Donald Trump participated by taking calls from children while monitoring NORAD’s Santa tracker. Speaking from Florida, he informed one child of Santa’s real-time location while adding a humorous touch by suggesting that tracking Santa prevents any “bad Santa” from entering the U.S.

While the Santa tracker brings smiles, it has also become an essential means for NORAD to engage with the public, showcasing a friendly side of an organization typically associated with defense and security. For many families, tracking Santa is now a cherished part of their Christmas Eve traditions.

After seven decades, NORAD's Santa tracking continues to symbolize imagination, kindness, and the spirit of the holidays, reminding everyone that even serious institutions can spread joy, especially on the most magical night of the year.
