North Korea has sharply criticised the G7’s latest call for the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, dismissing the statement as a “disguised hostile act” aimed at undermining its sovereignty. The response came after G7 foreign ministers gathered in Canada on Wednesday and reaffirmed their unified position condemning Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
According to a statement carried by North Korean state media, Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui condemned the joint declaration, saying the G7 countries were ignoring North Korea’s constitutional stance on nuclear weapons. She argued that the country’s nuclear arsenal is integral to its national defence, especially in what she described as an increasingly tense geopolitical environment.
Choe said the G7’s denuclearisation demand was unrealistic and out of touch, reiterating that North Korea views its nuclear weapons as essential to “deterring the most dangerous and hostile states.” The foreign minister emphasised that Pyongyang would not compromise on what it considers its strongest security guarantee.
The G7 statement, released earlier this week, urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program and return to diplomatic dialogue. The bloc expressed deep concern about the country’s continued weapons development and repeated missile launches in recent years.
Despite the pressure, North Korea maintains that its nuclear policy is rooted in its constitution and remains non-negotiable. With geopolitical tensions rising and diplomatic talks stalled, the latest exchange signals a widening gap between Pyongyang and the international community.
