OpenAI Purchases Sky to Integrate ChatGPT Natively into macOS

OpenAI has purchased Software Applications Incorporated, the developer behind Sky, marking a strategic push to extend ChatGPT beyond web browsers and into the macOS desktop environment.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, praised Sky as a standout desktop AI experience. Sky allows users to draft, plan, code and organise tasks using plain-language commands while recognising the content displayed on their screen, effectively serving as an on‑device AI assistant for Mac users.

OpenAI confirmed that the full Sky team will join the company, bringing specialised macOS design and engineering skills to strengthen ChatGPT’s desktop capabilities. Turley said the move helps accelerate OpenAI’s aim of embedding AI into the everyday tools people rely on, and suggested closer ties with native Mac applications are forthcoming.

The app was developed by a compact, design-driven group led by Ari Weinstein, who has focused on intuitive, automation-rich interfaces. Weinstein described Sky as an assistant that "floats over your desktop to help you think and create," reflecting the product’s goal of making interactions with computers more natural and collaborative.

Leadership on the transaction included Nick Turley and Fidji Simo, and the acquisition received sign-off from OpenAI’s independent Transaction and Audit Committees. Prior to the deal, an investment vehicle linked to Sam Altman held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated.

With Sky now part of OpenAI, users should expect ChatGPT to shift from a purely conversational tool to an active desktop companion, able to assist across multiple applications and tasks in real time. The acquisition represents a notable step toward integrating AI more seamlessly into daily computing workflows.
