OpenAI is feeling the pressure following the launch of Google’s Gemini 3 Pro, regarded as one of the leading AI models currently available. In an internal memo, CEO Sam Altman openly recognized the company is experiencing “rough vibes” as Google continues to lead in innovations that threaten to redefine the AI landscape.
Altman pointed out Google’s impressive progress in every stage of AI development, especially in pre-training, indicating that OpenAI is up against tougher competition than previously encountered. Nevertheless, he assured the team that the organization is “catching up fast” and possesses sufficient internal resources to withstand competing models.
This memo, released shortly before Gemini 3’s formal introduction on November 18, highlights the need for focus and resilience. “We must remain focused amid short-term competitive pressures,” Altman stressed, emphasizing that the commitment of the research team is vital to long-term ambitions like achieving superintelligence. He concluded on an optimistic note, saying, “I wouldn’t switch places with any other firm.”
Google’s Gemini 3 Pro is now accessible across several platforms, including AI Mode in Search, Vertex AI, AI Studio, the Gemini app, and Gemini Enterprise for developers and businesses. Its integration with anti-gravity technology aims to enhance developer experiences and applications.
Altman also discussed the broader implications of AI, acknowledging that while short-term job disruptions may occur, the technology is set to generate entirely new avenues for work in the future. “In the short run, AI will eliminate many jobs. Over the long term, as with all technological revolutions, we will uncover entirely new roles to fill,” he remarked, demonstrating a hopeful outlook regarding the transformative capabilities of AI.
OpenAI remains dedicated to advancing its models while maintaining resilience in an increasingly competitive AI market where international rivals are continually raising stakes.
