OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have announced plans to open five new data centre sites in the United States as part of OpenAI’s Stargate infrastructure platform. These new centres aim to support large-scale artificial intelligence development and will expand the existing campus in Abilene, Texas, as well as ongoing projects with CoreWeave.
The expansion is expected to bring Stargate’s total planned capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and total investment to over $400 billion within the next three years. The companies said this growth puts them ahead of schedule to reach a $500 billion investment goal and 10-gigawatt capacity target by the end of 2025.
In July, OpenAI and Oracle agreed to develop up to 4.5 gigawatts of additional capacity. This partnership is projected to bring more than $300 billion in investment over five years and strengthen AI infrastructure across the United States.
Three of the new sites will be located in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a Midwest location yet to be announced. Near the Abilene campus, an additional 600 megawatts may also be added. The other two sites, developed with SoftBank, will scale up to 1.5 gigawatts within 18 months. One is in Lordstown, Ohio, where construction has already begun on a new advanced data centre expected to start operations next year. The second is in Milam County, Texas, to be built with SB Energy, a SoftBank company.
The new data centres are expected to create more than 25,000 onsite jobs, with tens of thousands more indirectly across the country. They will also bring economic benefits to local communities through construction, infrastructure development, and support services.
These centres are designed to speed up artificial intelligence development, improve system scalability, and reduce costs for large-scale applications. They will support high-performance computing, cloud-based operations, and faster access to AI tools for research and commercial use.
The Oracle-developed sites will integrate with the existing Abilene campus, ensuring smooth operations, improved performance, and efficient management of workloads across multiple locations.
The five new sites are the first phase of the Stargate expansion. More locations in the US are expected as the $500 billion investment goal is approached. The expansion aims to make the United States a global hub for advanced AI development.
This investment strengthens the position of OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank in the technology sector, supporting innovation, research, and commercial applications while creating new jobs and boosting local economies.
