Two big movie companies are taking legal action against an artificial intelligence company called Midjourney. These studios say that Midjourney’s computer program copies their famous characters, like Yoda from Star Wars, Elsa from Frozen, and the Minions from Despicable Me, without permission.
Midjourney lets people type in words and then create pictures based on those words. The studios claim that Midjourney’s system learned by using pictures of their characters from the internet, but didn’t pay or ask for permission. They say this is stealing, even though a computer is doing it.
The movie companies want the court to stop Midjourney from making or sharing any more images or videos that use their characters. They also want money for the damage they say was done.
Midjourney is a small company, but it made about $300 million last year by selling subscriptions to its image-making service. The company has not yet replied to the lawsuit.
This case is important because many people in the entertainment world are worried that AI could take their work or copy their ideas without permission. Some artists and writers have already complained about AI using their work to learn. Now, these big studios are trying to protect their creations in court.
