Exciting news for cookie enthusiasts! Oreo, the beloved sandwich cookie, is stepping into the sugar-free arena in the United States. Beginning this January, Mondelez will unveil Oreo Zero Sugar and Oreo Double Stuf Zero Sugar as permanent new offerings, marking the brand's first foray into sugar-free cookies on U.S. soil.
These cookies have already made waves in Europe and China, and now American fans can savor the timeless taste with no sugar. Mondelez emphasizes that this launch supports the emerging trend of “mindful indulgence,” catering to those who wish to enjoy sweet treats without sacrificing their health goals.
Health-Conscious Snacking on the Rise
Market data shows a clear shift: more Americans are on the lookout for snacks they deem “healthier.” Reports from Circana highlight a growing demand for wellness-oriented options and portion-controlled snacks, particularly among younger generations like Millennials and Gen Z. Even Conagra Brands, recognized for its popcorn and Slim Jim snacks, has noted an increase in consumers seeking snacks that blend indulgence with wellness.
Moreover, the successful sales surge of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar draws a parallel, as the product—launched in 2017—experienced a 9% rise in sales last year, contrasting sharply with the modest 2% growth of regular Coke. Mondelez's sugar-free Oreos will now vie for market share alongside Hershey's zero sugar treats and Voortman's sugar-free wafers.
A Tasty Solution for Nutrition
The journey to create these sugar-free Oreos spanned four years, focusing on maintaining the classic Oreo flavor profile. The new cookies are made with a blend of maltitol, polydextrose, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium.
A serving of Oreo Zero Sugar (22.6 grams) contains 90 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, and 16 grams of carbohydrates. In contrast, a regular serving of three Oreos (34 grams) packs 160 calories, 7 grams of fat, and 25 grams of carbohydrates—along with 13 grams of added sugar, which constitutes 26% of the recommended daily limit. In stark contrast, the new Zero Sugar Oreos are completely free of added sugars.
With this innovative launch, Oreo aims to serve snack lovers eager to enjoy their favorite cookies while monitoring their sugar consumption—potentially transforming how Americans view indulgent snacks.
