Islamabad: An earthquake of 4.5 magnitude shook parts of Pakistan early on Saturday, raising fresh concerns about seismic activity in the region. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) confirmed that the quake was recorded at 01:59 am IST, with a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the earth’s crust.
According to the NCS report, the earthquake’s epicenter was located at latitude 28.30 N and longitude 65.25 E inside Pakistan. Experts say that the depth of 10 km indicates it was a shallow earthquake, which often causes stronger shaking on the surface despite having a moderate magnitude.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also reported that earlier this week, on October 2, 2025, another 3.2 magnitude earthquake had been recorded in Karachi. That quake was experienced seven kilometers northwest of Malir at 09:34 am, also at a depth of 10 km. Residents of Karachi, especially those near Malir, reported feeling mild tremors that caused panic in some areas.
Authorities confirmed that no significant loss of life or property damage has been reported from either quake. However, residents expressed fear due to the close timing of two earthquakes within just three days.
The PMD advised citizens to stay alert and follow earthquake safety guidelines, including moving to open spaces during tremors and avoiding elevators. Emergency services remain on standby in case of aftershocks.
Pakistan is located in a seismically active region, lying at the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This makes the country highly prone to earthquakes of varying intensity. Past events, including the 2005 Kashmir earthquake that killed thousands, remain a grim reminder of the devastating impact such natural disasters can cause.
Seismologists warn that while Saturday’s 4.5 magnitude earthquake was moderate, repeated tremors highlight the importance of preparedness and disaster management systems.
In Karachi and Malir, residents shared experiences of shaking furniture, rattling windows, and sudden fear as tremors passed. Many people rushed outdoors for safety. Social media platforms also saw an increase in posts from concerned citizens discussing their experiences and urging others to stay safe
While the 4.5 magnitude earthquake in Pakistan caused no reported damage, it has sparked fear due to its shallow depth and the recent 3.2 magnitude quake in Karachi. Authorities are closely monitoring the seismic situation and urging people to remain cautious.
The back-to-back earthquakes serve as a reminder of the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters, stressing the need for better awareness, strong infrastructure, and preparedness measures.
