The renowned luxury brand Prada has once again made waves, but this time for a reason that goes beyond its chic runway presentations. The Italian fashion label has launched an accessory that appears deceptively simple: a safety pin brooch, bearing a hefty price of ₹69,000 ($775).
Dubbed the "Crochet Safety Pin Brooch," this item is elegantly wrapped in colorful crochet yarn and boasts Prada's signature triangle logo. Constructed from brass and cotton, the brooch is about 3.15 inches long and comes in three vibrant color pairings: blue with brown, baby pink mixed with pistachio green, and a striking orange paired with brown, exuding an autumn-inspired look.
What astonishes many is the stark difference between its luxury price and the typical safety pin, which can be purchased for just ₹10 in local markets. Social media users wasted no time sharing their humorous critiques. One user quipped, “We’d create something like this in school during needlework!!” Another commented, “I could whip this up in any color and even add a gold charm for the pin.” Reacting to the price, one user noted, “You could fill an entire wardrobe for ₹70,000,” while others recalled purchasing similar items from local shops for mere pennies.
This isn't Prada's first encounter with intense scrutiny over pricing. Previously, the brand faced backlash for selling Kolhapuri-style chappals for ₹1.2 lakh, raising questions regarding the acknowledgment of traditional Indian craftsmen involved in the design. The backlash grew so strong that a public interest litigation (PIL) was submitted to the Bombay High Court, seeking compensation for alleged design misappropriation.
While high-end fashion brands often promote commonplace items at exorbitant prices to emphasize exclusivity and brand reputation, the reaction to the safety pin brooch highlights the delicate balance between sophisticated style and public skepticism. Some view it as an audacious affirmation of brand value, while others see it as an unnecessary show of opulence.
