An 82-year-old retired state government officer from Pune tragically passed away after falling victim to a Rs 1.2 crore digital arrest scam. The conmen, impersonating Mumbai Cyber Police and CBI officials, manipulated the elderly couple into believing they were under investigation for money laundering. Over three days, the scammers kept the couple under “digital arrest”, coercing them to share sensitive bank and Aadhaar details, ultimately draining nearly all their life savings, including money sent by their daughters from abroad.
The retired officer collapsed at home on October 22 and was declared dead at a hospital. Police confirmed the distress caused by the ordeal, highlighting the growing psychological toll of cyber fraud on elderly citizens. Cybercrime experts warned that no legitimate authority can arrest anyone over the phone and urged citizens to stay alert, verify all suspicious calls, and never share personal details online.
The Pune digital arrest scam has raised alarm over online fraud targeting vulnerable groups, with authorities stressing the importance of vigilance and immediate reporting of suspicious activity.
