Indonesia's Shrimp Industry Faces Crisis After Radioactive Contamination

Indonesia's Shrimp Industry Faces Crisis After Radioactive Contamination

Post by : Samir

Radioactive Contamination Discovered in Shrimp Shipment

In August 2025, a batch of Indonesian shrimp exported to the United States was found to be contaminated with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. The shrimp was processed at PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS), located in the Modern Cikande Industrial Estate near Jakarta. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) subsequently added BMS to its red list, advising against the consumption or distribution of its products.

Widespread Impact on the Shrimp Industry

The contamination incident has caused a significant decline in Indonesia's shrimp industry. Processing absorption has fallen by 30-35%, and shrimp prices have dropped up to 35% in several regions. The United States is a major market for Indonesian shrimp, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the country's shrimp exports. The incident has shaken buyer confidence, with foreign buyers awaiting assurances regarding the safety of all Indonesian shrimp products.

Government Response and Ongoing Investigations

Indonesian authorities have formed a task force to investigate the extent of the contamination. The country's nuclear agency is working to determine the size of the affected area, which includes multiple locations within the industrial estate. Health screenings have been conducted for over 1,500 individuals, with nine receiving treatment for radiation exposure. Decontamination efforts are ongoing, and the government is coordinating with international bodies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency and U.S. authorities, to address the situation.

Economic and Social Implications

The shrimp industry is a vital sector in Indonesia, providing employment to millions of people. The contamination incident threatens the livelihoods of workers across the supply chain, from farming to processing and export. If the situation persists, it could lead to widespread job losses and economic hardship for communities dependent on the shrimp industry.
