Lung cancer is among the most dangerous types of cancer, with early detection being crucial for effective treatment. Dr. Tarang Krishna, a seasoned cancer surgeon with over two decades of expertise and managing director at Cancer Healer Centre, has identified three critical signs of lung cancer that everyone should be aware of.
It's a common misconception that lung cancer primarily affects smokers. Dr. Krishna cautions that non-smokers aren't exempt from this risk. Environmental factors, such as pollution and second-hand smoke, can contribute to lung cancer in individuals who have never smoked. “While smokers need to be cautious, non-smokers should also be on guard,” he emphasizes.
A protracted cough that worsens over time is a significant alarm sign. Dr. Krishna advises, “If you’ve been experiencing a cough for two to three weeks that seems to escalate, it’s imperative to consult a physician.” Overlooking a lingering cough can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, coughing up even minor amounts of blood is a critical indicator that requires urgent medical intervention. “Any presence of blood in your cough is a serious warning sign,” notes Dr. Krishna. Individuals may also experience challenges with breathing or discomfort in the chest during ordinary activities. He stresses, “If you face shortness of breath or chest pain while performing daily tasks, you need to seek medical advice without delay.”
Lung cancer frequently displays symptoms during later stages, increasing its lethality. Early identification of these signals can facilitate prompt testing, diagnosis, and treatment, thereby significantly enhancing survival rates. Symptoms like a chronic cough, blood in the cough, or chest discomfort should not be ignored. Both smokers and non-smokers need to stay alert. Prompt consultation with healthcare professionals is essential for early detection and effective treatment of lung cancer.
