England Women Gear Up to Challenge Brazil at Etihad

England Women Gear Up to Challenge Brazil at Etihad

Post by : Maya Rahman

Under the guidance of head coach Sarina Wiegman, the England Women’s national team is poised to take on Brazil in a friendly match at Etihad Stadium this Saturday. This encounter marks the first meeting between the squads since the 2023 Finalissima at Wembley, where England triumphed in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.

It will be England's first match since clinching the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 title. Shortly after facing Brazil, the team will then compete against Australia three days later in Derby, an opportunity for experimentation with new players and strategies ahead of future contests.

With Leah Williamson sidelined due to injury, midfielder Keira Walsh will step in as captain for this friendly. Coach Wiegman has also indicated that Alex Greenwood, who is part of the leadership group, will offer support. Walsh's experience is expected to be invaluable as the team rallies in Williamson's absence.

Wiegman indicated that Brazil poses significant challenges with their strong physicality and quick attacking style. She underscored that the South American squad adds flair to the game, and England aims to retain possession to avoid being dragged into overly physical exchanges.

Lucy Bronze has been honored as England’s Player of the Year for 2025, according to fan votes, edging out Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton. Wiegman praised Bronze for her effective performance, leadership qualities, and positive presence on and off the field. Her role is seen as essential to team unity and growth.

Returning to her home ground at Etihad Stadium, Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood is excited for the match against Brazil. A key player in both Euro-winning squads, Greenwood looks forward to the familiar setting and the lively atmosphere.

Wiegman stressed the importance of these friendlies for trialing player combinations, integrating newcomers, and handling player absences due to injuries or retirements. She sees the upcoming four friendlies as vital for evaluating squad depth and preparing for future challenges, all while keeping the squad motivated and building on their Euro success.

As they face Brazil, England enters with confidence, bolstered by the leadership of Walsh and Greenwood and the experience of key players like Bronze. The team is eager to sustain its winning momentum while assessing strategies and players ahead of upcoming international competitions.
