Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has expressed his support for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s impending visit to China, viewing it as a pivotal move towards addressing trade challenges affecting Canadian farmers.
Moe shared his enthusiasm regarding Carney's scheduled trip next week to engage in trade discussions, especially as significant Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola products are still in effect. He is optimistic that these negotiations will enhance market access for canola, a crucial crop for the Prairies that has been subject to restrictions since spring.
At present, China levies a 76% tariff on Canadian canola seed, a decision often interpreted as retaliation for Canada’s 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.
Beyond canola seed, China has also implemented tariffs on various Canadian goods, including canola oil, meal, peas, pork, and specific seafood products. This response followed Canada’s levy on Chinese steel and aluminum.
Moe emphasized the need for Canada to adopt a genuine and pragmatic approach in its interactions with China.
“Engaging seriously with China is essential if Canada is committed to expanding and diversifying its markets globally,” Moe noted in a statement on social media.
In September, Moe visited China with federal representatives to actively pursue solutions to the ongoing trade crisis.
During his visit, Prime Minister Carney is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. This will mark the first official visit from a Canadian prime minister to China in over eight years, representing a critical moment in Canada–China relations.
