Saudi Arabia Elected to the IMO Council for 2026–2027

Post by : Maya Rahman

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved a significant milestone by securing a position on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the term of 2026–2027. This election, held in London, saw Saudi Arabia receive 142 votes from various member states, underscoring its pivotal role in influencing the global maritime landscape. The IMO, a specialized agency under the United Nations, is tasked with developing international standards for maritime safety, curbing pollution from ships, and safeguarding the marine environment.

Saleh Al-Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Transport General Authority (TGA), extended his gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince for their unwavering support for the Kingdom’s transport initiatives. He noted that the election is a testament to the international community's confidence in Saudi Arabia’s capabilities and its rising influence in maritime matters.

The TGA reiterated that this achievement is a testament to the robust backing from the Kingdom's leadership aimed at enhancing the maritime transport sector. Moreover, it aligns with the objectives set out in Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to bolster Saudi Arabia’s status as a vital participant in global transport and logistics. Significant advancements in the Kingdom’s maritime sector encompass state-of-the-art port developments, a premier regional fleet, and streamlined shipping operations that contribute to enhanced global competitiveness.

Saudi Arabia’s ports are strategically located on crucial trade routes, like the Red Sea, which facilitates about 13% of global trade. The National Transport and Logistics Strategy aspires to boost port performance, ensure smoother trade transitions, and broaden marine tourism, comprising cruise and coastal transport services. These measures reinforce the Kingdom's strategic position and elevate its status as a global maritime hub.

The election to the IMO Council further emphasizes Saudi Arabia’s significant role in the realm of international maritime regulation. The Kingdom remains committed to enhancing maritime security, fostering safe and efficient shipping practices, and aiding global endeavors aimed at environmental protection. As a council member, Saudi Arabia will collaborate closely with other states to enforce international maritime policies, promote sustainable practices, and share knowledge to advance global maritime transport systems.

Additionally, the Kingdom’s inclusion strengthens its ability to influence discussions surrounding maritime safety, environmental safeguarding, and sustainable transport. This membership privileges Saudi Arabia to partake in critical decisions and initiatives shaping the future of maritime sectors globally.

This achievement symbolizes Saudi Arabia’s visionary ambition to emerge as a dominant force in the international maritime arena. It recognizes the Kingdom’s ongoing investments in upgrading ports, enhancing its fleet, and improving its logistics framework. The election also underscores Saudi Arabia’s success in adhering to international standards while actively protecting marine ecosystems and providing safe shipping services.

Through this prestigious membership, Saudi Arabia reiterates its dedication to fostering international maritime collaboration, developing regulations, and advancing cooperative initiatives that bolster global trade and security. The Kingdom’s proactive engagement in the IMO Council further cements its reputation as a formidable maritime leader and embodies its leadership vision aimed at driving sustainable sector growth.
