9/11 Survivors Voice Outrage at Saudi Crown Prince's US Trip

9/11 Survivors Voice Outrage at Saudi Crown Prince's US Trip

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Washington, Nov 19, 2025 — Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's recent visit to the White House has sparked renewed outrage among 9/11 survivors. They voiced their anger over his presence, despite his assurances that Saudi Arabia is committed to preventing future tragedies.

During a joint media briefing with former US President Donald Trump, Prince Salman discussed the September 11 attacks and the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. “It’s heartbreaking to hear about lives lost for no reason. It was a grave error, and we are working relentlessly to ensure it never happens again,” he stated, underscoring Saudi Arabia's pledge to enhance global security.

The prince contended that Osama bin Laden exploited Saudi nationals in executing the 9/11 attacks, saying, “Those who subscribe to this narrative only serve to fulfill Bin Laden’s objective.” He underscored the importance of maintaining robust diplomatic relations with the U.S. to effectively fight extremism.

Nonetheless, survivors expressed deep frustration and disbelief regarding the crown prince’s visit to the Oval Office. Many stress that accountability for both the attacks and Khashoggi's murder remains elusive. U.S. intelligence agencies deemed in 2021 that Prince Salman had ordered Khashoggi's assassination, a claim he has consistently refuted.

Advocacy groups representing survivors highlighted that while diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia are vital, genuine justice and transparency are crucial for healing. “This visit intensifies the reminder that families of victims still seek accountability,” noted a representative from the 9/11 Victims’ Families Association.

In response to inquiries regarding Khashoggi's death, Trump defended Salman, saying, “He knew nothing about it.” This statement has provoked backlash amidst ongoing discussions on human rights and U.S. foreign policy.

The crown prince’s visit aligns with initiatives aimed at advancing civilian nuclear partnerships and defense agreements, including a deal for F-35 jets. However, the shadows of the past, including 9/11 and Khashoggi's death, complicate the dynamics of U.S.-Saudi relations, revealing a tension between pragmatic diplomacy and ethical accountability.

Experts suggest the visit epitomizes the delicate balancing act between fostering diplomatic ties and addressing historical grievances. While Saudi Arabia aims to solidify strategic alliances and reassure its partners, victims and human rights advocates persistently call for recognition, accountability, and reform.

This visit brings to the forefront lingering obstacles in U.S.-Saudi relations, especially regarding transparency, accountability, and global trust. It highlights the enduring impacts of 9/11 and significant events like Khashoggi’s assassination on foreign policy, security approaches, and international perceptions of Saudi governance.

As the crown prince continues his engagements in Washington, global audiences remain attentive, evaluating promises of reform against the calls for justice from victims and worldwide observers.
