A 22-year-old Malaysian man has been formally charged with murder in Singapore following the death of a 21-year-old woman whose body was discovered at a Housing and Development Board residential block in Choa Chu Kang earlier this week.
According to court documents, the accused, identified as Mohamad Faiz Umar, allegedly murdered Chua Bee Ting inside a lift at Block 248 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2 on the evening of May 26. Authorities stated that the incident is believed to have taken place between 8:53 p.m. and 9:22 p.m.
Singapore police said officers responded to a call for assistance around 9 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered the victim lying motionless at the 12th-floor lift lobby of the residential building. Emergency responders later confirmed her death at the scene.
Preliminary investigations reportedly indicate that the victim suffered stab wounds. Police also confirmed that the accused and the victim were known to each other, although officials have not disclosed further details regarding the nature of their relationship.
A resident living in the building reportedly told local media that she heard a loud sound before noticing a man lying on the ground floor near a dustbin area after looking out from her apartment window. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following the incident, Mohamad Faiz Umar was arrested on suspicion of murder and later taken to the National University Hospital for treatment. The court has adjourned the case until June 18 as investigations continue.
Under Singapore law, individuals convicted of murder may face the death penalty. The case has attracted significant public attention due to the violent nature of the incident and its occurrence within a public housing complex.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding possible motives or evidence collected during the investigation. Police said inquiries remain ongoing as forensic teams and investigators continue reviewing the case.
