The shutdown of pig farms in Tanjong Sepat, Selangor, has entered its final stage with approximately 11,000 pigs remaining before the closure process is fully completed. Authorities confirmed that around 30 farms are still operating temporarily as part of a phased transition plan ordered by the state government earlier this year.
Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Executive Councillor Datuk Izham Hashim said the closure process has been carried out gradually since February after authorities determined that some livestock were not mature enough for disposal at the time the eviction order was issued. Officials stated that no new piglets are being brought into the farms during the final transition period.
According to the state government, all remaining livestock will be transported in stages to the slaughterhouse in Rawang. Authorities expect the entire closure operation to be completed soon before stricter enforcement measures begin in July.
Izham Hashim revealed that Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, along with Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin, recently held discussions regarding the transition strategy. The government is now focusing on converting the 141.6-hectare area into alternative high-value agricultural activities after pig farming operations end completely.
Officials also announced that a special meeting scheduled for June 9 will review federal and state government support measures for affected operators. Plans reportedly include land restoration initiatives and assistance programs to help 87 farm operators shift toward other forms of agriculture or economic activities.
Earlier reports stated that all pig farms in Tanjong Sepat are expected to cease operations completely by the end of June. Enforcement measures are scheduled to begin officially on July 1 following a six-month grace period provided to operators to wind down business activities and sell remaining livestock.
The closure follows a decree issued by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who has maintained opposition to pig farming activities across districts in the state. The directive has significantly reshaped the livestock industry landscape in the affected region.
Authorities emphasized that the transition process is being handled carefully in order to balance agricultural restructuring, economic sustainability, and social considerations for workers and business owners impacted by the closures. Officials say long-term development plans for the area are expected to focus on more sustainable and diversified agricultural sectors.
