Confession Videos Unveil Months of Planning by Brown-MIT Shooter

Confession Videos Unveil Months of Planning by Brown-MIT Shooter

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The individual implicated in the tragic deaths of two Brown University students and an MIT professor meticulously plotted the attacks for several months and left behind confession videos detailing his actions, according to revelations from the US Department of Justice.

Claudio Neves Valente, 48, identified as a former student at Brown and a Portuguese national, was discovered deceased on December 18 in a storage facility in New Hampshire, following a series of shootings that shocked the respective academic circles in Massachusetts and beyond.

The crisis unfolded on December 13, when Neves Valente unleashed gunfire within the engineering building at Brown University, claiming the lives of two students and injuring nine others, which resulted in extensive searches and campus lockdowns. On December 15, he fatally shot MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at the professor’s residence in Brookline, near Boston.

During the investigation of the storage unit where Neves Valente’s remains were located, FBI agents uncovered an electronic device containing multiple videos. In these recordings, filmed after the attacks, he spoke in Portuguese, candidly claiming responsibility for his heinous acts.

Transcripts published by the Justice Department reveal he had been “planning the Brown University shooting for a long time,” meticulously refining his plan over at least six academic semesters. His motives for targeting Brown or Professor Loureiro remain unclear, although he acknowledged their shared educational background in Portugal many years ago.

In the footage, Neves Valente showed no remorse for his actions, asserting he did not feel compelled to apologize. He claimed that no genuine apologies had ever been offered to him throughout his life. Additionally, he pondered about injuring his eye during the shootings, describing the execution of the attacks as “a little incompetent,” while also stating that “at least something was done.”

He articulated a desire to conclude matters on his own terms and expressed an indifferent attitude toward impending suffering. His remarks exhibited a chilling detachment as he dismissed any potential criticism with blunt responses.

Valente also discussed the storage unit, rented for about three years, and recounted a confrontation at Brown University that later became a significant lead for investigators. A witness, who recognized his behavior during previous encounters, later identified him in police-released photographs.

Following the attack, this witness shared insights on Reddit, even speculating about a gray Nissan linked to the suspect. Following user encouragement, he ultimately reported his observations to law enforcement, which had not previously associated any vehicle with the gunman.

In his recordings, Neves Valente revealed surprise at the length of time it took law enforcement to track him down after he was recognized by a witness who saw his license plate.

Neves Valente initially arrived in the United States about 25 years ago to study physics at Brown University, where he attended as a graduate student, departing the program in 2001. He secured legal permanent residency status in 2017 and most recently resided in Miami.

In his video confession, he expressed an apathy towards both the United States and Portugal, sharing that he had lived without significant concern for geographic location. These recordings, now integral to the federal investigation, offer a harrowing insight into the mind of an individual who deliberately plotted violence and documented his reflection on the events that tragically ended multiple lives.
