Spain kicked off their Women's Nations League semi-final with an impressive 4-0 win against Sweden on Friday. Playing on home turf, the Spanish squad showcased exceptional skill and synergy, providing them a significant edge before the return leg in Gothenburg next week. The standout players, Alexia Putellas and Claudia Pina, each netted two goals, spearheading Spain’s offensive charge.
The opening goal came in the 11th minute when Alexia Putellas executed a stunning free kick, finding the top corner and leaving the Swedish goalkeeper helpless. This powerful strike set the tone for the match, igniting the home supporters and establishing Spain’s early momentum.
In the 32nd minute, Claudia Pina doubled the lead, finishing off a well-placed shot following a precise pass inside the box. Spain’s fluid attacking play left Sweden’s defense in disarray, showcasing their mastery of possession and movement.
Just minutes later, Pina’s shot rattled the crossbar, but Putellas was quick to capitalize on the rebound, securing her second goal of the night. By halftime, Spain had established a solid 3-0 advantage, highlighting their offensive efficiency and teamwork.
After halftime, Sweden attempted to regroup and show more attacking flair, but Spain maintained dominance, controlling possession and dictating the game's tempo. Their organized defense and quick strikes limited Sweden's scoring chances.
As the match wore on, Claudia Pina added her second goal, concluding the 4-0 triumph for Spain. This goal underscored Spain’s relentless offensive prowess and ability to exploit defensive mistakes from Sweden. By the final whistle, Spain had clearly outperformed their rivals, heading into the second leg with a commanding lead.
Earlier in the evening, Germany managed a narrow 1-0 win over France in Duesseldorf, providing them a slight edge before the second leg on Tuesday. The victors of both semi-finals will clash in a two-legged final set for November 28 and December 2, promising a thrilling end to the Women’s Nations League.
