Spirit Airlines has unveiled another round of cost reductions as it works to stabilise its finances. The ultra-low-cost carrier plans to eliminate roughly 150 salaried jobs and cease service at five airports, among them Milwaukee and Phoenix, with the changes effective by January 2026.
The announcement arrives as Spirit grapples with growing financial strain after a prolonged period of losses and softer travel demand. The airline has warned of an estimated $804 million loss for 2025, highlighting the magnitude of the challenge to restore profitability.
In a company statement, Spirit said the measures are intended to "align operations with market realities and strengthen long-term financial health." The carrier acknowledged the decisions are difficult but said they are "necessary to secure a sustainable future and restore profitability."
Last month, Spirit disclosed plans to furlough 365 pilots and downgrade up to 170 more in early 2026 as part of a broader network optimisation. Executives said these personnel adjustments are designed to cut excess capacity and boost route efficiency.
Spirit’s turnaround blueprint, revealed earlier this year, targets a return to profitability by 2027. As part of that effort the airline intends to scale back its 2026 network, prioritising higher-yield routes and trimming services that underperform.
Known for its ultra-low-cost model, Spirit has been under pressure from rising operating costs, fierce competition and weak demand in certain markets. Disruptions from grounded aircraft, volatile fuel prices and the collapse of a proposed merger with JetBlue have further strained the carrier’s finances.
Despite the outlook, Spirit reiterated its commitment to offering affordable travel while it executes the restructuring. "We are taking decisive steps today to ensure Spirit’s success tomorrow," the company said.
The airline’s moves mirror broader trends across the U.S. aviation sector, where carriers are consolidating routes and cutting costs amid uncertain economic conditions.
