Ranbir Kapoor is celebrated as one of today’s most talented and diverse actors. Throughout his career, he has meticulously curated a body of work that ranges from romantic hits like Rockstar and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani to powerful performances in Sanju and Animal. His skill in merging charisma, complexity, and emotional depth has endeared him to both audiences and critics alike.
However, Ranbir's unique film choices and inclination towards alternative cinema often led to family debates. His late father, the iconic Rishi Kapoor, was one of his most candid critics, frequently voicing his concerns about his son’s career directions.
Subhash Ghai's Insights on Their Relationship
Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who enjoyed a longstanding friendship with Rishi Kapoor, recently shared his thoughts on the relationship between Rishi and Ranbir.
“Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor are distinct in their personalities,” Ghai mentioned. “The younger generation tends to pursue paths that don’t always align with their parents’ desires, leading to conflicts typical of father-son dynamics. But there was a foundation of immense love. Rishi hoped Ranbir would embrace Hindi cinema more fully despite his western influences.”
Rishi's Concerns Over Ranbir's Career
Ghai recounted instances when Ranbir returned from New York after studying filmmaking, where he and Rishi often clashed creatively. “Rishi would express how he reprimanded Ranbir about his film selections, but Ranbir remained silent; later, he would voice concerns to Neetu Kapoor about wanting the freedom to make his own choices,” he added.
According to Ghai, while their differing personalities caused tension, it was rooted in Rishi’s deep love and desire for Ranbir to thrive.
Ranbir’s Success and Rishi’s Absence
Ghai expressed his sorrow that Rishi Kapoor did not live to see the pinnacle of Ranbir’s career. “Ranbir throws himself into his roles completely. He has taken career risks—some successful, some not—but now he stands as both a top star and a formidable actor,” Ghai said.
He added, “Today, the media is quick to dub anyone with a few hits as a ‘superstar’, but Ranbir has genuine depth. I often think of Rishi and wish he could see how far Ranbir has gone. I used to tell Rishi, ‘Don’t push him too hard. Let him carve his own path.’ But that’s the instinct of every caring father.”
Ranbir’s Humility and Growth
The filmmaker also commended Ranbir’s humility and grounded character amidst his immense fame. “Ranbir has grown significantly post-marriage. He still respects elders by touching their feet when we meet. Those values remain strong,” Ghai remarked. “In fact, many new actors exhibit more arrogance than Ranbir. He maintains his simplicity, respect, and focus.”
On Nepotism and Talent in Bollywood
Addressing the ongoing conversation about nepotism in Bollywood, Ghai reiterated that ultimately, an actor’s success hinges on talent and hard work. “Numerous individuals from film families have failed to shine due to lack of skill or dedication. A surname won’t shield you from mediocrity if you lack talent,” he said.
He attributed Ranbir’s achievements to his genuine passion for acting and his willingness to take risks creatively. “He’s one of those rare talents who harmonize artistry with commercial success, which distinguishes him from others,” Ghai added.
Ranbir Kapoor’s Future Projects
Following the booming success of Animal, Ranbir Kapoor continues to be one of the most in-demand stars in the industry. He’s currently filming for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Love and War”, alongside Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal.
Ranbir is set to star in “Ramayan Part 1”, aiming for a 2026 release where he will play Lord Ram. Production for Part 2 is anticipated to start soon. There’s also speculation that Ranbir may be part of the next Dhoom installment—an exciting prospect that would have thrilled Rishi Kapoor.
Subhash Ghai’s insights shed light on Ranbir Kapoor’s growth as an artist while illustrating the timeless essence of a father-son bond; one enriched with love, conflict, pride, and evolution.
Though Rishi Kapoor is no longer here to celebrate his son’s monumental success, his legacy and commitment to cinema live on through Ranbir’s craft. In many respects, Ranbir Kapoor’s journey is a tribute to his father’s enduring influence and his own self-identity.
