A robust earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 occurred on Wednesday in Taiwan's southeastern Taitung county. This event, confirmed by Taiwan's weather bureau, had a depth of 11.9 km (7.39 miles).
The capital city, Taipei, felt the tremors, yet officials report no immediate damage or injuries. The National Fire Agency verified that there have been no significant incidents reported on the island.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the leading semiconductor manufacturer in the nation, stated that the quake did not necessitate any factory evacuations. Production at their facilities continued as usual.
Positioned near a tectonic plate boundary, Taiwan is susceptible to seismic activity. Historically, it has faced severe earthquakes, such as the devastating 7.3 magnitude quake in 1999 that claimed over 2,000 lives, alongside a 6.4 magnitude quake in southern Taiwan in 2016 that resulted in more than 100 fatalities.
Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have advised residents to stay vigilant for potential aftershocks. Emergency services remain on standby in Taitung and the surrounding areas to respond promptly if required.
Despite the earthquake's intensity, initial assessments indicate that Taiwan’s infrastructure and buildings endured the tremor well, underscoring the nation's readiness for such seismic challenges.
