‘Thamma’ intricately weaves itself into the broader tapestry of Maddock’s horror-comedy universe (MDHCU). The film revisits familiar storylines while delivering unexpected twists, establishing itself as a crucial bridge between ‘Stree’ and ‘Bhediya’. While its main narrative is engaging, it's the climactic sequence that solidifies the film's importance within the expanding MDHCU lore.
The movie culminates in a visually stunning encounter between two betaals—vampire-esque mythical beings. After Ayushmann Khurrana’s Alok triumphs over Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Yakshasan, the antagonist is ensnared with divine chains. These chains, infused with sacred energy, are only breakable by an extraordinary mantra. Here, ‘Thamma’ delivers a twist that resonates with the larger universe.
To fill in the gaps, ‘Stree 2’ concluded with a cliffhanger. The protagonists managed to defeat Sarkata, the central demon of the series, yet came across hints that signaled his potential return. In that film's final moments, Sarkata re-emerged, suggesting a larger impending conflict. ‘Thamma’ follows this storyline, confirming fans' suspicions: Sarkata is indeed alive.
Director Aditya Sarpotdar uses ‘Thamma’ as a platform to broaden the MDHCU by portraying Sarkata assembling a menacing army of villains, readying for a grand conflict against the universe’s supernatural protectors. In a chilling scene, Sarkata enters the cursed cave where Yakshasan is held captive, shattering the divine chains and freeing him. When Alok and Tadaka (Rashmika Mandanna) later find Yakshasan missing, they contemplate who possesses such dark powers, while the audience is already in the know.
A standout visual in the film is the first full portrayal of Sarkata—a fiery entity, clutching his severed head in one hand and roaring like an erupting volcano. Fans had long speculated about his return, and ‘Thamma’ makes it clear: Sarkata is transforming into the MDHCU’s version of a universe-altering villain, reminiscent of Thanos.
By addressing the threads left open in ‘Stree 2’, ‘Thamma’ validates long-time fans' theories: not only is Sarkata alive, but he is also actively amassing power. His return heralds a conflict that could eclipse all previous challenges faced by the supernatural heroes. With Yakshasan now liberated and Sarkata’s threatening army growing, the stakes in the MDHCU have reached unprecedented heights.
Looking forward, the upcoming entry in Maddock’s universe is ‘Shakti Shalini’. This film is anticipated to explore divine feminine energy and the emergence of supernatural women following the ‘Stree’ franchise. While it remains uncertain how Sarkata will fit into this new narrative, ‘Thamma’ unequivocally sets the groundwork for his explosive return, ensuring that fans await the next chapter with bated breath.
In conclusion, ‘Thamma’ does more than simply entertain; it enhances the interconnections within Maddock’s horror-comedy universe. By linking the narratives of ‘Stree’ and ‘Bhediya’ and providing a shocking return of Sarkata, the film guarantees that the saga continues to unfold in thrilling and unpredictable avenues. Viewers have ample theories to ponder, from the emergence of new villains to the potential for titanic battles involving the supernatural heroes.
Until the next chapter unfolds, ‘Thamma’ invites the audience into a realm of discussion and speculation, affirming that the MDHCU is evolving into a fully realized supernatural universe.
