During a recent official visit to Brussels on 21 October 2025, Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi, the UAE Minister of Justice, engaged in discussions with Annelies Verlinden, Belgium’s Minister of Justice, aimed at enhancing judicial collaboration. The two leaders concentrated on the urgent need to tackle cross-border and transnational crime issues.
Their joint statement emphasized both nations’ commitment to upholding the rule of law and shared principles of international justice, noting the escalating challenges posed by criminal activities that cross borders. They underlined the significance of solid legal frameworks, mutual assistance, and timely information sharing among relevant authorities.
Minister Verlinden acknowledged the UAE’s proactive role in fostering judicial partnerships and the efficacy of its law enforcement in addressing transnational crime. She underlined the necessity for continued collaboration anchored in existing bilateral agreements and international conventions.
Minister Al Nuaimi reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to strengthening its legal relationship with Belgium and the broader international community. He pointed out that cooperative operations and mutual trust are essential to elevate the fight against cross-border criminality. Notably, since the implementation of the extradition agreement with Belgium in November 2022, 14 individuals have been extradited from the UAE to Belgium, while one individual was returned to the UAE in April 2025.
He expressed gratitude for Belgium’s effective collaboration and praised the professionalism of its judicial system, citing it as an exemplary model of international cooperation in realizing justice.
The Ministers affirmed their intention to continue their productive dialogue through the established Working Group on Judicial Matters, evaluating ongoing cases and preparing for possible future challenges to enhance judicial cooperation with old and new initiatives.
Both nations also showed an eagerness to promote expertise exchange, training, and capacity-building programs aimed at boosting their judicial efficiency while equipping them to more effectively combat cross-border crimes.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to further consolidate their legal instruments and institutional ties necessary for fighting transnational crime, protecting public safety, and promoting justice. The next session will take place in the United Arab Emirates.
