UAE and OCHA Collaborate on Sudan Humanitarian Crisis

UAE and OCHA Collaborate on Sudan Humanitarian Crisis

Post by : Maya Rahman

Reem Al Hashimy, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, engaged in discussions with Tom Fletcher, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs at OCHA, in Geneva, Switzerland. Their meeting centered on the escalating humanitarian challenges faced by Sudan and the immediate actions required to provide assistance and restore order.

Both leaders acknowledged the pivotal role of ongoing US mediation efforts and recognized the collaboration with the Quad nations as critical to achieving an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. With ongoing violence causing immense hardship for civilians, they stressed the urgency of ceasing hostilities to enable meaningful dialogue.

Al Hashimy and Fletcher conveyed their growing concerns regarding the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where millions are displaced and access to essential needs like food, clean water, and medical care is severely limited. They agreed that humanitarian aid must be delivered swiftly and without impediments.

Their discussion emphasized the necessity for safe, rapid, and unrestricted humanitarian access across Sudan. The leaders highlighted that aid organizations must operate freely to provide crucial assistance to communities affected by the conflict. Ensuring the safety of aid workers was labeled essential for preventing further casualties.

The protection of civilians remains a high priority for the global community. Al Hashimy and Fletcher underlined the urgent need to shield individuals affected by the conflict, asserting that all parties involved must adhere to international humanitarian law, safeguarding civilians, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and other vital services.

They also stressed the significance of holding accountable those responsible for severe crimes, noting that justice for victims is vital for healing and achieving lasting peace in Sudan.

Another vital point raised was the immediate necessity for enhanced funding. Humanitarian groups in Sudan are grappling with substantial financial challenges, hampering their ability to deliver essential supplies. Al Hashimy and Fletcher called for increased support from the international community to ensure continued, principled humanitarian assistance.

The UAE has long supported peace initiatives and humanitarian efforts in Sudan, reflecting its commitment to alleviating suffering and cooperating with international partners for a stable future for the Sudanese population.

Fletcher welcomed the UAE's proactive involvement, emphasizing that global cooperation is critical in addressing a crisis of this magnitude. He noted that joint international endeavors can help decrease violence, enhance access, and provide humanitarian relief to millions in dire need.

The meeting ended with both leaders advocating for strengthened global solidarity and expedited action. They voiced optimism that ongoing diplomatic efforts, coupled with enhanced humanitarian support, would lead to relief for Sudan and assist the nation in its journey toward peace and stability.
