The United Arab Emirates has been actively involved in crucial meetings of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) held in Bern, Switzerland. These discussions mark the outset of a new term for the UPU’s Council of Administration as well as the Postal Operations Council. The sessions succeeded the notable 28th Universal Postal Congress, which saw the UAE proudly acting as host in Dubai this past September.
Leading the UAE delegation, Tariq Al Wahedi, CEO of 7X, was appointed Chairman of the UPU Council of Administration for the term 2026–2029. Al Wahedi chaired the inaugural meeting of this new phase, which is the top governing body in the UPU, overseeing the execution of agreements and policies established during the Congress. Approval was also given for new initiatives aligned with the UPU’s Dubai Strategy 2026–2029.
During these discussions, the council addressed vital topics including governance improvements, financial reforms, enhancing international postal collaboration, and expediting digital advancements across member nations. A key focus remained on bolstering assistance for developing countries to upgrade their postal frameworks. Another significant aspect was deliberating on how to implement the Dubai Strategy to adapt to the evolving landscape of the digital economy and global supply chains.
The agenda also comprised forming committees and technical working groups aimed at supporting specialized projects. Furthermore, new monitoring systems for the UPU’s performance during the upcoming “Dubai Cycle” were approved to ensure accountability and transparency.
The leadership role of the UAE within the UPU underscores its growing prominence in the international postal and logistics arena, reflecting its commitment to advancing a more effective, efficient, and sustainable global postal network. This role also reinforces the UAE’s status as a key hub for eCommerce, logistics, and progressive digital solutions.
In addition to the Council of Administration, the UAE's delegation attended Postal Operations Council meetings concentrating on the technical and operational aspects of the worldwide postal system. Key discussions dealt with enhancing service quality, evolving settlement models, upgrading digital systems, and facilitating seamless cross-border eCommerce services.
Tariq Al Wahedi remarked that the inaugural meeting marked the beginning of a significant chapter in the UPU’s evolution. He reaffirmed the UAE’s pledge towards fostering innovation, effective governance, and sustainability in postal services, aiming to transform the aspirations and objectives outlined at the Dubai Congress into tangible actions that will fortify global postal networks and nurture economic growth.
Al Wahedi also highlighted that the future trajectory of postal services transcends mere delivery of letters and parcels, indicating a shift towards leveraging data and knowledge sharing, thus creating opportunities for community connections.
The UAE’s involvement in these UPU meetings showcases its persistence in steering the future of global postal operations and reflects a longstanding dedication to digital progress and innovation within the public domain. This aligns with the national vision “We the UAE 2031,” designed to establish the UAE as a global nucleus for trade, connectivity, and knowledge sharing.
