Father's Health Plays a Crucial Role in Pregnancy and Child's Future, Says UK Doctor

Father's Health Plays a Crucial Role in Pregnancy and Child's Future, Says UK Doctor

Post by : Saif Rahman

Dr. Karan Rajan, a UK surgeon, is shedding light on a vital issue often overlooked: the influence of a father’s health on pregnancy and the child’s future wellbeing. His core message is clear: the responsibility of preparing for pregnancy is not solely on the shoulders of women. Men significantly contribute too, and their lifestyle choices play a crucial role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy and infant.

In a video shared on Instagram on November 29, Dr. Rajan discussed the lifestyle adjustments he made while preparing for fatherhood. He noted that sperm take around 74 days to mature. Therefore, he advises men to start prioritizing their health at least three months before trying to conceive, as their choices during this time directly affect sperm quality.

Dr. Rajan elaborates on how pregnancy symptoms and complications are not just tied to the mother’s health but also linked to the quality of the father’s sperm. Poor sperm quality has been connected with an increased risk of pregnancy issues, such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia—serious conditions that can impact both mother and baby, underscoring the importance of a father's health right from conception.

Sperm contains more than mere genetic material; it also carries epigenetic markers—tiny chemical tags influenced by men’s lifestyle choices. Factors like diet, exercise, and stress can significantly affect these markers. Studies indicate that men who smoke, eat unhealthily, or lead overly sedentary lives may pass higher risks of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease to their offspring.

To support expectant fathers in making the right choices, Dr. Rajan proposed a straightforward “preconception playbook.” He encourages men to quit smoking and limit or avoid alcohol, due to its adverse effects on sperm morphology and count. He also emphasized key nutrients that benefit men—folate, often discussed in relation to women, is essential for men as well. Low folate can negatively impact sperm health. Additionally, Vitamin D is crucial for healthy sperm and early placental development; Zinc enhances sperm motility, and omega-3 fatty acids are vital for overall sperm quality.

Dr. Rajan advised men to take their sleep seriously, as poor sleep can lead to decreased sperm count and quality. Regular physical activity, even a short walk, can help regulate hormones and maintain overall health. Stress reduction is also critical, as stress can damage sperm; he suggests finding healthy coping mechanisms, such as meditation, breathing exercises, or even venting into a pillow.

Through his insights, Dr. Rajan aims to instill the idea that preparing for pregnancy is a joint effort. A healthy father can significantly contribute to a smoother pregnancy and a promising future for the child. His guidance serves as a poignant reminder that both parents influence a baby’s health long before birth.
