The Venezuelan government stated that a staggering 100 individuals lost their lives during a recent U.S. military operation aimed at ousting President Nicolás Maduro. This figure was revealed by Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela's interior minister, on Wednesday, serving as the first official report regarding casualties from the operation.
This announcement follows a bold military raid on Saturday that saw U.S. forces enter Caracas in efforts to apprehend Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores. Reports indicate that both sustained injuries, with Flores suffering a head wound and Maduro injuring his leg.
Previously, the Venezuelan army had disclosed the names of 23 soldiers killed, yet this new statement marks the first comprehensive death toll. Venezuelan officials claim that many of the deceased were members of Maduro's personal security team and accused U.S. forces of cold-blooded killings. Furthermore, they indicated that Cuban military and intelligence personnel based in Venezuela were also among those who died.
In light of the fatalities, interim president Delcy Rodríguez announced a week-long mourning period to pay tribute to those who were killed in the raid, commending the military personnel for their defense of the nation.
While the U.S. has yet to issue its own detailed casualty statistics, differing reports suggest that the actual number of deaths might be lower, estimating around 75 fatalities, inclusive of security personnel and civilians. However, the Venezuelan government firmly stands by its assertion of 100 dead.
The aftermath of the raid has sparked strong international reactions. Venezuelan authorities have vehemently denounced the U.S. operation as an infringement on their sovereignty and international law. Other nations and global leaders have echoed concerns about the implications of military action and its potential impact on regional stability.
The situation continues to change as Venezuela remains polarized post-operation. The reported death toll alongside the political ramifications will undoubtedly influence the country's trajectory in the coming months, intensifying tensions between the United States and Venezuela, with discussions surrounding foreign policy and international norms at the forefront.
