The Golden State Warriors achieved a thrilling overtime victory over the Denver Nuggets, winning 137-131 on Thursday night in San Francisco. The matchup featured incredible performances, crucial plays, and an intense scoring battle between Stephen Curry and Aaron Gordon. Just two days prior, the Warriors had kicked off their season with a win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
With just 26 seconds left in regulation, Aaron Gordon hit a pivotal 3-pointer to put the Nuggets up 125-123. Curry quickly answered, knocking down a 34-foot shot that tied the game with only 4.1 seconds remaining, forcing an overtime period. This dramatic moment led to a tense battle between the two teams from the Western Conference.
Leading the Warriors, Curry finished with an impressive 42 points, including a remarkable 10-for-11 from beyond the arc. In overtime, he teamed up with Al Horford and Jimmy Butler III to propel a 12-2 run, capped by Horford’s three-pointer and Curry’s layup with 23.9 seconds remaining, ultimately clinching the game for Golden State. Curry's floor leadership and scoring prowess were key in overcoming the Nuggets’ tough challenge.
Aaron Gordon, on the other hand, had a career-high performance, registering 50 points and matching his record of 10 three-pointers in a game. He came close to surpassing J.R. Smith’s franchise record, but the Nuggets fell short despite Gordon’s incredible shooting display. Denver’s fight was significant, but the Warriors’ balanced offensive attack proved too strong in the final moments.
Nikola Jokic also made an impact, recording a triple-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. This marked his fourth-consecutive season opener with a triple-double, tying Oscar Robertson’s record. While Jokic kept the Nuggets competitive, his efforts were not enough to lead them to victory in overtime.
Moreover, the Warriors benefited from contributions from six players who scored in double figures, including Jimmy Butler with 21 points and Jonathan Kuminga with 14 points. Draymond Green and Al Horford both added 13 points, while Brandin Podziemski and Buddy Hield chipped in 11 points each. Draymond Green was instrumental too, contributing eight rebounds and eight assists for a well-rounded team effort.
Jamal Murray recorded 25 points and 10 assists for the Nuggets, while Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 10 points. Denver led by as many as 14 points in the early game, but as the Warriors demonstrated solid teamwork and shooting down the stretch, they completed an impressive comeback. Although Gordon showcased exceptional skill, it wasn’t enough to secure a win for the Nuggets.
The Golden State Warriors exhibited remarkable resilience and team dynamics, fighting back against the Denver Nuggets in an electrifying overtime contest. With Curry's 42 points and various crucial contributions from teammates, the Warriors solidified their strong season start, while Gordon's historic performance for Denver created a memorable moment in defeat.
