A recent case in Bengaluru shines a light on a prevalent but often overlooked health issue among women—silent or asymptomatic fibroids. A 30-year-old IT professional underwent a routine employment health assessment and appeared physically fit, regularly active at the gym. Surprisingly, she reported no pain, heavy menstruation, or discomfort. However, scans revealed multiple fibroids, some comparable in size to an 8-month pregnancy.
Health experts were astonished, as her robust abdominal muscles concealed these substantial growths. Dr. Madhuri Vidyashankar P, a gynaecologist from Motherhood Hospital, noted that her findings reflect a concerning reality: many women harbor fibroids that exhibit no symptoms. She pointed out that nearly half of her patients are found to have asymptomatic fibroids.
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that can form inside or outside the uterus, consisting of muscle and fibrous tissue. These formations fluctuate in size; from tiny seeds to large growths that can alter uterine shape. Despite their prevalence, numerous women remain unaware of their presence until significant growth occurs.
While some fibroids manifest through symptoms like heavy menstruation, pelvic pressure, or infertility issues, these mild signs can be misinterpreted as normal by many. Research indicates an increased likelihood of fibroid development in women aged 35 to 39 and beyond. Studies also warn that unnoticed fibroids can pose risks if they become excessively large, potentially impacting kidney health, causing frequent infections, or complicating pregnancy.
Dr. Vidyashankar emphasizes her encounters with women oblivious to the fibroids developing within them, underscoring the dangers of their silent progression. In this case, the patient exhibited no signs, despite the fibroids being comparable to those typically seen in late pregnancy. Her vigorous lifestyle and strong musculature likely masked the swelling.
Doctors caution that fibroids may persist for years without noteworthy discomfort. If undetected, they might eventually lead to pain, urinary complications, fertility issues, or infections. This illustrates the necessity of routine check-ups and imaging, particularly for women experiencing unclear symptoms.
This case serves as a notable reminder that not every abdominal enlargement signifies a baby; sometimes, the body conceals significant health challenges needing attention. With silent fibroid cases on the rise, medical professionals advocate for consistent monitoring and early detection to prevent complications from large, untreated growths.
Ultimately, this situation reaffirms the importance of women tuning into their bodies, even in the absence of pain. Regular health assessments play a crucial role in identifying silent health concerns before they escalate.
