Zelensky Urges Trump for Tomahawks as US Pushes Peace Talks

Zelensky Urges Trump for Tomahawks as US Pushes Peace Talks

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the White House on Friday with urgent requests for advanced weapons, including the long-range Tomahawk missiles, as Ukraine continues to fight the ongoing war with Russia. Zelenskyy, visibly focused on strengthening Ukraine’s defense, met with US President Donald Trump, who appeared more concerned about initiating peace talks than upgrading Ukraine’s arsenal. The war between Ukraine and Russia has already claimed thousands of lives, displaced millions, and escalated tensions across Europe, making Zelenskyy’s visit a crucial plea for international support.

During the more than two-hour meeting, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to launch offensives against Russian targets but stressed that without American Tomahawk missiles, his country’s efforts would be limited. “We don't have Tomahawks, that's why we need Tomahawks,” Zelenskyy said, highlighting the urgent need to match Russia’s military advances. Trump, however, expressed caution about supplying such powerful weapons, noting that the United States also wants to retain its missile stockpiles for national security. Analysts say this reluctance to provide Tomahawk missiles leaves Ukraine in a vulnerable position while Russia continues its aggressive campaign.

Trump, while cordial with Zelenskyy, focused on brokering a potential peace deal, urging both Ukraine and Russia to "stop the war immediately." He suggested that a ceasefire could be reached even if Ukraine conceded territory. “You stop at the battle line, and both sides should go home, go to their families,” Trump told reporters. The US president’s remarks underscored a broader strategy of positioning himself as a mediator, despite Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy, however, made it clear that achieving a ceasefire has been challenging, stating that “Putin doesn’t want it,” emphasizing the gap between the US’s diplomatic approach and Ukraine’s battlefield needs.

The meeting also shed light on the growing tension between Ukraine’s demand for long-range missiles and the US desire to avoid escalation. Zelenskyy reportedly told Trump that Ukraine is prepared with thousands of drones ready for action but stressed that Tomahawks are essential to tipping the scales. Trump acknowledged the need but prioritized peace efforts over supplying new weapons. This dynamic has reignited fears among European allies that the US might prioritize negotiation with Russia over providing Ukraine the military support it urgently requires to defend its territory in the war.

Meanwhile, Russia continues to make territorial gains despite the ongoing conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed earlier this month that his forces had captured nearly 5,000 square kilometers of land in 2025, adding to the 20 percent of Ukrainian territory already occupied. The war has intensified, with both sides escalating attacks on each other’s energy systems, and Russian drones and jets occasionally straying into NATO countries. For Ukraine, obtaining Tomahawk missiles could be a game-changer, allowing for sustained pressure on Russia’s military-industrial complex and shifting the balance in the war.

Analysts see Trump’s emphasis on talks as a delaying tactic that could weaken Ukraine’s position. Max Bergmann, a Russia expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that Moscow’s resistance to providing weapons like Tomahawks is strategic, aiming to limit the US’s willingness to supply Ukraine. Mykola Bielieskov, senior analyst at Come Back Alive, explained that Tomahawks could help Ukraine apply constant pressure on Russia, disrupting their operations and reducing their advantage in the ongoing war. Zelenskyy’s plea underscores the stark reality: Ukraine’s war effort depends not only on diplomacy but also on tangible support from allies willing to provide advanced weaponry.

Despite the tension over weapons, Zelenskyy described his meeting with Trump as “productive” and said he is counting on US influence to pressure Putin to halt the war. Speaking with European leaders after the visit, Zelenskyy remained realistic about his chances of securing long-range missiles, emphasizing that diplomacy must continue alongside military preparedness. The US president, meanwhile, maintained a conciliatory tone, calling for dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, suggesting that “getting along a little” could prevent further loss of life, even as the war rages on.

The stakes remain high as Ukraine battles to reclaim its territory in a war that has global implications. Zelenskyy’s visit highlights the delicate balance between military assistance and diplomatic negotiations, with the demand for Tomahawk missiles representing a critical need for Ukraine’s defense. The world watches closely as Trump prepares to meet Putin in Hungary, raising questions about the near-term prospects for weapons aid to Ukraine and the potential impact on the ongoing war. For Zelenskyy and his country, the urgency of obtaining Tomahawk missiles reflects the harsh reality of the battlefield and the relentless fight to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty amid an unpredictable global conflict.
