AWS Outage Disrupts Global Apps, Services Return After Hours

AWS Outage Disrupts Global Apps, Services Return After Hours

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Amazon Web Services (AWS) returned to normal operations on Monday afternoon after a widespread outage that disrupted thousands of websites and applications across the globe. The AWS outage affected millions of users and critical services, including popular platforms like Snapchat, Reddit, Venmo, Zoom, and gaming apps such as Fortnite and Roblox. Amazon said the AWS outage stemmed from a network monitoring issue at its US-EAST-1 data center, one of its oldest and most crucial hubs.

During the AWS outage, users worldwide reported difficulties accessing everyday apps, causing global disruption to work, online payments, and entertainment. Experts warned that the AWS outage highlights the vulnerability of interconnected digital infrastructure, as reliance on a single cloud provider can magnify the impact of technical glitches. While AWS confirmed normal operations resumed, some services, including AWS Config and Redshift, faced backlogs that would take several hours to clear.

The AWS outage began in the company’s US-EAST-1 region, which has previously experienced similar disruptions in 2020 and 2021. Amazon attributed the AWS outage to an internal network subsystem that monitors load balancers, which distribute traffic across servers. The AWS outage prevented applications from connecting to the DynamoDB API, a key cloud database service relied upon by thousands of companies worldwide. This AWS outage disrupted services in London, Tokyo, and other major cities, demonstrating the global impact of cloud infrastructure failures.

Developers and cybersecurity experts noted that the AWS outage underscores the need for redundancy and backup solutions. “When companies rely heavily on one service, outages like AWS can cause millions in lost productivity and revenue,” said Nishanth Sastry, computer science researcher. The AWS outage not only affected tech firms but also financial institutions, government websites, and telecommunications providers, illustrating the critical role of AWS in modern digital operations.

Thousands of companies reported issues during the AWS outage, including apps like Duolingo, Coinbase, Robinhood, and Signal. Amazon’s own platforms, including Prime Video, Alexa, and its shopping website, were also temporarily impacted by the AWS outage. Despite the disruption, Amazon shares rose slightly, reflecting investor confidence in the company’s long-term operations. The AWS outage serves as a reminder of how deeply global businesses and daily life depend on cloud infrastructure.

In response to the AWS outage, experts urge companies to build fault-tolerant systems and utilize multiple cloud providers to reduce risk. “AWS provides powerful tools, but companies must prepare for potential outages,” said Cornell University professor Ken Birman. The AWS outage is the latest example of how critical cloud services have become, with even brief disruptions causing cascading effects worldwide.
