Dubai Kicks Off Season of Wulfa to Honor Emirati Culture

Dubai Kicks Off Season of Wulfa to Honor Emirati Culture

Post by : Badri Ariffin

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, has inaugurated the Season of Wulfa, a cultural initiative aimed at honoring Emirati traditions and values.

This initiative aspires to spotlight Dubai's rich heritage, reinforce social connections, and establish the emirate as a global hub for tolerance, coexistence, and respect among various cultures. Under Sheikh Hamdan's direction, the Season of Wulfa will be led by Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, featuring a variety of cultural, social, and community-centered activities throughout.

A Foundation in Heritage and Spiritual Values

The UAE's heritage intertwines deeply with spiritual values, community bonds, and local customs. The Season of Wulfa will commence with Hag Al Leila on the 15th of Sha'ban, spanning through Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr, and Eid Al-Adha.

These events signify vital moments within the UAE's cultural and spiritual calendar, uniting them to celebrate traditions that have molded Emirati society over generations.

The Season of Wulfa is anchored by three core principles: reflection, connection, and blessing. These pillars find expression in customs that carry profound social and spiritual significance, fostering unity, strengthening relationships, and tightening community ties.

Cultivating Belonging and Cultural Identity

The initiative emphasizes the preservation of longstanding traditions while adapting them to resonate with contemporary society. It aims to increase awareness of cultural heritage, enhance belonging among community segments, and support initiatives that spotlight the role of culture in nurturing a compassionate and cohesive society.

A Collaborative Citywide Celebration

The Season of Wulfa will showcase over 50 events across more than 30 locations throughout Dubai, including community neighborhoods, marketplaces, and primary cultural destinations. The program will be realized in partnership with governmental bodies, the private sector, and local communities.

This collaborative effort will establish a dynamic cultural and humanitarian platform, inviting citizens, residents, and global visitors to engage in cultural exchange while honoring shared human values and lasting traditions.

Sheikh Hamdan: Bridging Values and Society

Sheikh Hamdan articulated the importance of fostering creative initiatives that strengthen ties to values, identity, and community.

“This initiative celebrates the community spirit of the UAE while preserving our cultural heritage,” he stated. “It fosters belonging and unity, builds cultural bridges, and strengthens the cohesive spirit foundational to a robust society. Our aim is to enhance connections, both personal and social.”

He remarked that a community's strength lies in its power to uphold its living memory and impart values to future generations in contemporary manners. The Season of Wulfa creates an interface where history intersects with the present, converting traditions into impactful experiences that inspire participation, cultivate awareness, and amplify responsibility towards safeguarding cultural identity.

Sheikha Latifa: Celebrating Shared Values and Humanity

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed emphasized that the events incorporated into the Season of Wulfa—Hag Al Leila, Ramadan, and the two Eids—are deeply rooted in humanitarian values that foster positive interactions and harmonious living.

She conveyed that the season's focus is on nurturing bonds and generating warm moments that reflect the essence of Emirati culture, melding rich heritage with innovative experiences.

“Dubai consistently places cultural heritage at the forefront of its priorities,” she mentioned. “This heritage is our collective history and underpins our future. Following the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai serves as a paradigm of cultural harmony, hosting nearly 200 nationalities who actively shape the emirate’s narrative.”

She added that the Season of Wulfa further solidifies Dubai's status as a global exemplar for coexistence, tolerance, and harmony. Through its three foundational pillars—reflection, connection, and blessing—the initiative encapsulates fundamental human values, profound cultural richness, and authentic traditions.

Engaging Current and Future Generations

The season aims to present opportunities for creatives to showcase their thoughts and insights via celebrations that convey a universal message of tolerance and understanding. It will include innovative, multi-sensory cultural experiences that marry heritage with modern lifestyles steeped in local customs and hospitality.

These experiences embody the true spirit of Wulfa—familiarity, closeness, and community—intended to fortify social relationships while presenting Emirati heritage to future generations in a meaningful and engaging manner.

The Essence of ‘Wulfa’

The term Wulfa is derived from the classical Arabic word ‘Ulfa, symbolizing familiarity and affection. In the UAE and broader Arab regions, Wulfa often describes intimacy and warmth among individuals—a definition that perfectly embodies the spirit and aspirations of this engaging initiative.

With the introduction of the Season of Wulfa, Dubai adds a significant chapter to its cultural anthology, celebrating its heritage while fostering connections among individuals, communities, and cultures.
