Afghanistan is grappling with a dire humanitarian emergency as catastrophic floods and extreme weather have ravaged several provinces, resulting in at least 61 fatalities and 116 injuries.
The Afghanistan Red Crescent Society reports that four individuals remain unaccounted for as search and rescue operations are underway to ascertain the full extent of devastation caused by persistent rainfall and flash floods.
The toll on both infrastructure and livelihoods is alarming. Current estimates indicate that 2,448 homes have sustained either complete or partial destruction, compelling numerous families to evacuate and seek refuge elsewhere. Additionally, close to 26,841 jeribs of farmland have suffered irreparable damage, which is a severe setback for the nation’s already precarious agricultural sector.
Furthermore, the loss of livestock has been substantial, with over 1,000 animals perishing, exacerbating the economic hardships for rural communities reliant on agriculture and animal husbandry.
Officials have cautioned that conditions could worsen as weather forecasts predict further heavy showers, increasing the likelihood of additional floods, landslides, and storm-related incidents.
While emergency response measures are in progress, the extent of the devastation underscores an urgent call for humanitarian aid and effective long-term disaster management strategies for the affected regions.
