Thailand's Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul held a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries. The discussion took place in a warm and constructive atmosphere, reflecting the long-standing friendship between Thailand and Canada. During the conversation, Prime Minister Carney expressed condolences on the passing of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati and invited the Thai Prime Minister to visit Canada. Prime Minister Anutin also invited his Canadian counterpart to make an official visit to Thailand.
Diplomatic Relations Reach 65-Year Milestone
Both leaders welcomed the strong relationship shared by Thailand and Canada, noting that 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. They agreed that the milestone presents an excellent opportunity to deepen cooperation across several sectors, particularly trade, investment, education and people-to-people exchanges. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close diplomatic ties and expanding future partnerships.
Focus on Trade and Free Trade Agreement
Economic cooperation was one of the main topics discussed during the call. Both Prime Ministers agreed to continue efforts to conclude negotiations on the ASEAN–Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA) within this year. They also expressed interest in exploring the possibility of a future bilateral Thailand–Canada Free Trade Agreement, which could further increase trade, investment and business opportunities for both countries.
Security Cooperation to Be Strengthened
The two leaders also discussed strengthening security cooperation to address common regional challenges. They agreed to expand collaboration in military cooperation and enhance joint efforts to combat transnational crimes, particularly online scams and cyber-related criminal activities. Both sides emphasized that closer security cooperation would contribute to greater regional stability and public safety.
Canada Supports Thailand's OECD Membership
Prime Minister Anutin highlighted Thailand's goal of becoming a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as part of the government's efforts to improve laws, regulations and public administration according to international standards. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Thailand's commitment and confirmed Canada's full support for Thailand's OECD membership application.

Leaders Reaffirm Long-Term Partnership
At the end of the conversation, both Prime Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in all areas, including trade, security, investment and people-to-people relations. They expressed hope to meet in person in the near future to further deepen the partnership and create long-term opportunities that benefit the economies and citizens of both Thailand and Canada.
